THE AMERICAN EDUCATION SYSTEM

In the United States, education is primarily the responsibility of local governments. Each state has its own curriculum, educational structure, subject list, textbooks and extracurricular activities.

Education is compulsory until the age of 16–18, depending on the state. A high school diploma is awarded upon completion of studies and fulfilment of the graduation requirements established by each state.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

In elementary school, children study core subjects, with curricula varying from state to state. Basic lessons typically include English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, the Arts and Physical Education.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

In middle school, students can choose optional subjects alongside compulsory ones. Core disciplines such as English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education and Social Studies are studied for a set number of years or terms, depending on the requirements of each state.

HIGH SCHOOL

At the high school level, students follow a wider range of subjects. Alongside compulsory subjects, they may choose optional courses (electives) to complete the required number of credits.

Many schools also offer advanced courses, such as Honours classes (with a more demanding curriculum), the Advanced Placement (AP) programme, which allows pupils to take courses at university level, and the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme.
